COVID-19 Update for the Campus Community

April 08, 2021 7:00 PM

Dear Western Community Members,

With yesterday’s state of emergency declaration and the province-wide, stay-at-home order, we wanted to clarify how this impacts the university and provide some additional important updates.

Campus facilities

Most facilities on campus are closed – including campus eateries, the University Community Centre (UCC), study spaces, and all indoor and outdoor recreational facilities.

To prioritize the health and safety of our campus community, only the lower-level health services in the University Community Centre (UCC) remain open, including Workplace Health at Western, Student Health Care and University Pharmacy and essential services: Campus Vision, UCC Dental and Western Chiropractic

All Western Libraries are closed and study spaces are not available for booking. No-contact pick-up of collections is available at Weldon only. All current digital and remote services continue.

Campus recreation

The Western Student Recreation Centre and Thompson Athletic and Recreation Centre are closed, as are all outdoor recreational facilities, including volleyball and basketball courts.

Access to campus

All buildings on campus remain locked. Faculty, staff, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars with permission can continue to access buildings with approved swipe cards.

All university employees should continue to work from home if the nature of their work does not require them to be on campus. Western will continue to communicate with its employee groups and supervisors will communicate any change for staff in their work assignment directly.

Those on campus must now wear three-layer non-medical masks issued by the university rather than cloth masks, indoors and in the presence of others. Employees must complete the ‘return to campus’ questionnaire prior to each visit to campus.

All face-to-face research with human participants on campus and in the field is paused, unless directly related to COVID-19 or otherwise approved on a case-by-case basis using the two-level process already in place. Occupancy in Western’s research spaces remains at 30 per cent capacity. For more information, visit

Information for students

In a message sent earlier today, we are strongly recommending that students in residence return home. The move-out period to be eligible for a refund and moving allowance has been extended to Wednesday, April 14 at 1:00 p.m.

In compliance with the stay-at-home order, those students remaining in London are reminded to stay in place unless you are travelling home. Continue to limit your close contacts to one other person.

A COVID-19 test at the Western testing centre is now available for any student prior to returning home. Students are urged to schedule an appointment in advance.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit recommends all students quarantine for two weeks upon returning home, regardless of your COVID-19 test result.

Final exams/assessments

As announced on April 1, classes were moved online, with some exceptions in clinical programs or non-health related programs that cannot be modified for virtual delivery. Any change in planned in-person assessments will be communicated directly by the course co-ordinators.

Children’s summer day camps

We know this news will be disappointing to many, but the difficult decision has been made to not offer in-person children’s summer camps on campus this year. Some digital summer camp programs are available, and details will be shared over the coming weeks.

Complimentary parking is available in most campus parking lots until September 1. Parking permit holders will not be charged for May through August. For more information, visit

Summer term courses

As announced in February, most summer term courses will be online. Limited exceptions include some clinical in-person learning that supports health-related programs, and approved non-health related programs (i.e. labs, studios, music) that cannot be modified for virtual delivery. These in-person classes will continue to closely follow all COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

With the third wave upon us and variants of concern in our community, we must be more vigilant than ever.

It has been a long, tough year, but as we start to see accelerated vaccine distribution, we can be hopeful for brighter days ahead this summer and into the fall.

Thank you for your ongoing support and for continuing to do everything you can to take care of yourself, each other and our community.
